The outcome of excellent religious education is religiously literate and engaged young people who have the knowledge, understanding and skills – appropriate to their age and capacity – to reflect spiritually, and think ethically and theologically, and who are aware of the demands of religious commitment in everyday life.
Religious Education Curriculum Directory for Catholic Schools 2012 and 2025
At Great Crosby Catholic Primary School to fulfill our aims and objectives we use the ‘To Know You More Clearly’ (EYFS and Years 1, 2, 3) and ‘Come and See’ (Years 4, 5, 6) programmes of Religious Education as recommended by the Archdiocese of Liverpool.
To achieve this outcome, we:
• Provide a broad, well-balanced Religious Education curriculum in a stimulating and fun
learning environment where we recognise the unique qualities in every child and
encourage freedom of expression.
• Develop the children’s knowledge and understanding of the Catholic Faith and, where
appropriate, other religious traditions, by following the Gospel values and providing
opportunities for prayer, worship and spiritual growth and ensure these permeate the
whole curriculum.
• Ensure children feel cared for and care for each other so that everyone who enters
our community feels welcome to engage in examination of and reflection upon their own
life stance, to deepen their personal faith commitment and to respect that of others.
We will strive for friendliness not loneliness to work together as one body.
(1 Corinthians12: 27-28)
• Give children a happy, memorable time at our school, where we promote the child’s
innate capacity for wonder, awe, reverence and imagination to shine in all that they do
and for everyone to see – “…so that those who come in can see the light.” (Luke 8: 16-17)
Since September 2023, we have been using the ‘To Know You More Clearly’ programme from the new Religious Education Directory (RED). This programme is currently optional but will be compulsory for all year groups from September 2026. We have chosen to start the programme as it is rolled out by the Archdiocese of Liverpool for each year group.
The dates for the role out of the new RED Curriculum are as follows:
Autumn 2023 - EYFS
Spring 2024 - Year 1
Summer 2024 - Year 2
Autumn 2024 - Year 3
The overviews are below.
Branches and Lenses
There are six branches in ‘To know You More Clearly’ – one per half term. The branches are:
1. Creation and Covenant
2. Prophecy and Promise
3. From Galilee to Jerusalem
4. From Desert to Garden
5. To the Ends of the Earth
6. Dialogue and Encounter
Each branch follows:
· Hear
· Believe
· Celebrate
· Live
At the end of each branch and lenses the children will:
· Understand
· Discern
· Respond
In Key Stage 2, Religious Education follows “Come and See”. Each year group from Year Three to Year Six covers three topics each per term which link to a whole school theme. In addition to this, the children learn about other faiths and religions throughout the year.
At the end of each Come and See topic each class will celebrate Collective Worship which is used as an opportunity for the children to share their learning in Come and See with the rest of their class school, their family and their school community.
We made an Advent Wreath.
We enjoy acting out pieces of scripture that we have heard such as the Feeding of the 5000.
We have displayed footsteps to show that we are walking in Jesus’ footsteps.
We made paper chains to remind us that we are all one family.
On Tue 25th Jun, Fr John, Fr Mark, Sally, Pat, Brian and Deacon Tony came to see Year 1.
The RE topic this half term is called Creation and Covenant. Year 2 children have been learning about what a covenant is.
As part of their To Know You more clearly topic this term we have been answering the question 'Who is my neighbour?' We have looked at the scripture (Lk10:25-37) - the parable of the Good Samaritan and we have discussed how we can be like the Good Samaritan and help our neighbours.
We have then looked at a local charity that follows Jesus' example of this teaching. Bridge2 is based in Toxteth and supports refugees and asylum seekers in Liverpool.
The children have chosen to help by having a collection of goods for them.
They are a great example of how to be a good neighbour! Our friend Olivia who works at Bridge2, also sent us this video.
Michael Marks visited our EYFS and KS1 children, teaching them about the Jewish way of life. They wrote in Hebrew script, made a scroll and tried some traditional Jewish dancing.
We studied the scripture (Galatians 5:22-23) -Fruits of the Holy Spirit.
Year 3 have been learning about Islam. The children handled the Qur'an.
